Case Study:
Central chiller, part water and part air cooled, designed for expansion
Key Points:

There was a major expansion planned to take place in roughly three phases. There would ultimately be a need for total new chilling capacity in the range of 180 to 200 ton to be implemented in about 60 tons at a time. There was also an existing water tower, tank and pump system that should be incorporated into the expansion plans to save some cost.

The problem was to plan for the expansion phases in a way that would be cost effective, save floor space, and simply implementation at each phase.

Problem

Phase one utilized a water cooled chiller taking advantage of the existing tower. The tank and pumps were oversized in order to be able to economically add chilling capacity in the future.

In phase two, a chilling module was simply added to the tank. The pumps were already large enough for the added capacity, and the piping had been designed to easily branch off.

When phase three came around, the tower was out of capacity, and so the next module was an air cooled unit, that once again was able to tie into the original tank that had been sized accordingly up front.
